Orissa: Beaches of Orissa

Puri Beach
Puri, 60 kms from Bhubaneshwar, is famous as a pilgrimage center with the Jagannath temple attracting thousands of pilgrims who come to worship here, particularly during the Rath Yatra. The other aspect of this old city of Orissa is the celebrated coastline with it's sandy beaches. The beach front is wide but hardly used for beach sports. The sea at Puri can often be quite rough and treacherous and requires expert swimming and knowledge of local conditions. It is recommended that swimming is done only in the company of life guards. There are several resorts and guest houses that line the beaches, and range from budget hotels to the luxurious.

Gopalpur-on-Sea
Another popular beach resort is Gopalpur-on-Sea, 170 km from Bhubaneshwar, and 15 km from Berhampur. This is a fairly isolated beach, undisturbed by day-trippers, unlike Puri. It is wonderful for both sailing and surfing.

Chandipur
Another great beach resort of Orissa, Chandipur, is situated 16 kms from Balasore. Here the sea recedes by some 5 kms during low tide and advances to the shore line again during high tides.

Konark Beach
Three kms from the famous and not to be missed temple at Konark is a clean open stretch of beach. The currents here can be quite strong, so extreme caution is advised.
